Statistics from BRÅ (http://www.bra.se/bra/brott-och-statistik/valdtakt-och-sexualbrott.html) show that 20 300 sex crimes were reported to the police in Sweden during 2014. 98% of sex crimes are committed by men and this has prompted a group of men to react, starting a project aimed at spurring change. FATTA MAN (http://fatta.nu/fatta-man/om-fatta-man/) has two aims:
- The formation of a legislation based on consent
- More resources for the promotion and prevention of sexual violence.
FATTA is turning to men and boys to initiate change, making a move away from the hegemonic masculinity with its obsession with power and control that represents the culturally idealized form of “manhood”. Men are realising that they too have a part to play from the preschool to the workplace in teaching boys about consent, the power of “No”, and the road to the creation of a society where everyone, regardless of sex, can navigate the world without fear of sexual assault. As the title of the following song by FATTA MAN says, “It Starts With Me”.
